Hello beautiful yogis!
" I just need a diet I can stick to"
"Give me a meal plan I can follow"
"Tell me what to eat and I will eat it"
I often hear this from students and I think - What are they looking for? What is below the surface? I get the sense they believe “Help me, I don’t trust myself or my body” or “I feel terrible about myself” or “I feel so much inner pain and sadness.” Many think I can do it for them . I am often overcome with feelings of empathy and sadness at these deeper cries for help. I feel my own sadness and need for help from my past , but I am also excited for the change they truly desire – inside and out. The truth is, there is no nutritionally focused plan that will provide true and lasting results. (Key word: lasting. Reminder: 95% of diets fail.) Meal plans and diets take too much effort to maintain long-term. And they do not fulfill the real needs we long for or the vibrancy and radiance we expect. What we truly seek are feelings of joy, lightness, freedom, confidence, creativity, happiness… The list goes on. It doesn't matter how much kale we eat, that alone will never bring inner freedom. To be able to break free of struggles with food and body, the work is inside of us. Not outside. The outside will change as a result of feeding our deeper, inner needs, desires and longings. Until those are cared for, the patterns with food and control over it will only continue. Yogically (not sure if this is a word) , when we practice gratitude each moment of each day - we become happier, lighter, more confident and more creative! It all happens in the brain.. One of my practices daily is to notice when I am being ungrateful and then change it in my brain. Grace before meals is to practice gratitude for the food. Are you being grateful for that meal? Even if it is kale? Are you grateful? Listen to your words and your thoughts ...if they are ungrateful, start to practice a simple smile and heart of great thanks!
