In all of my years in fitness I have witnessed and tried many diet fads, extreme exercise programs and "cleanses" that work for a short time. While for many , it is a great jump start, for most , we gain the weight back and try something else.
Although goal setting is good, here is what I have found.
When our goals are a simple surface goal - lose weigth, eat better - we are less likely to have long term success.
When we make a deeper descision to achieve a goal like:
Become more active to play with my children or grandchildren.
Eat better to reduce my medication.
Practice yoga to reduce back pain.
We are more successful .
We are sure to encounter trying times on our journey to good health. Truly, when our goals have higher stakes , we are more likely to stick with them or return when we falter.
If the "why" is important we can endure any "how".
Once you have the "why", we need to take the steps to achieve success by defining the "how". Cutting out heavy meals, stop the poor snacking habits, exercising daily, become more active. Consider picking a goal you do not measure in pounds. Possibly how far and fast you are able to run. How little time you spend sitting on the couch. How deep and long you can hold a yoga pose or even how many days you commit to exercise and check that off. There is no doubt or question at all that if we live a healthy lifestyle we will have a good healthy weight and toned body.
Eating rigth and exercising should be as common and as natural as brushing our teeth and taking a shower.
Many of us reach our goals and "then what?" ...Even after we establish our why and how and we reach our goals our job is not done! Living your goal is a bit harder than reaching it! It is much like when we are in yoga and we find our inner peace and ease and we feel so nice, then we go home and get agitated and disturbed. Maybe feel angry or impatient and lash out. It is much easier to find that inner peace for a short time , but living it is where the real work begins!
Many of us forget the "then what?" part of goal setting. Reality is , there is no end point. I like to think that when we reach our goal and we continue past that - we really make a deep groove of change in our future.
More than anything , lasting change takes strength and courage to face yourself over and over and over!
